So I have the drive installed and running for several months, no problems. However several months is trivial unless running 24/7 servers which this is not intended for so the limited stars, if it smokes I will comeback and say something else. Mounted in external case ( Wiebe TechTBS12T ).

I tried several times to get this drive to do what it’s supposed to do, which is, simply store data. Immediately after installation, I ran a test on the drive using the computer BIOS’s built in test/diagnostics functionality. After the 2+ hour test, it seemed to pass. Immediately, I attempted to use 2 different drive cloning utilities that worked seamlessly on every other drive I’ve cloned. Both utilities failed and both reported several “unable to write to sector xxx” messages at the end of the operation. Since these drives are large, each attempt took well over an hour each. I wasted a total of over 12 hours of my valuable time doing something that seems so simple. I’m very disappointed, to say the least. WD has always been one of my “first choice” picks for hard drives.

I bought this drive on July 21st 2008, it failed on Dec 15th 2008. The disk was bought to upgrade my PS3 which is never left running more than for a couple of hours a day 3/4 times per week at most. The machine was well ventilated and never ran hot.

I have to say WD in the last couple of years seemed to have fixed some of the quality and endurance issues they use to have but it seems they are slipping back to there old ways as I also have 2 external WD Passbooks which have both failed and neither are older than 12 mths old. Had either failed before I had bought this drive I would never have purchased this.

This is the best standard laptop drive on the market. Standard=Rotational HDD not SSD.

I replaced 2 on my laptop drives with this and I could not be hapier with the speed. One of the drives I replaced was an 80GB Intel SSD (I needed it for my desktop) and although thsi HDD is slower than the Intel, the speed difference is not phenomenal. As far as standard drives go, this is the best and also for a very good price.

4 stars only because as a previous reviewer clarified, the vendors are not clear on that free fall sensor. I had no idea they sell 2 models. Unfortunatelly I got the cheap one with no sensor.
