This is an economical, high capacity, average performance hard drive. A high performance notebook drive would typically be 7200 RPM, 16MB buffer. This drive can be turned into an external drive for backups etc by simply purchasing an external 2.5″ case such as Acomdata Tango 2.5-Inch USB 2.0 eSATA Portable Enclosure for SATA Hard Drive TNGXXXUSE-RED (Red) or you can put your existing notebook hard drive in the 2.5″ enclosure and use that as an external drive with the WD6400BEVT as your new main notebook drive. If you are planning on swapping out your main notebook drive, be sure to search for Acronis Migrate Easy software. It’s free (trial use) and transfers your entire operating system, applications, and data to the new drive without any problems. Check it out!

I put one in my macbook pro. It seems to work fine so far. Time will tell. I love the extra space.

I upgraded my MBP (late 2007) first with 320GB also WD from stock 160GB last year. Less than a year later, I am craving for more space (took too many videos and pictures and converted all of my CD’s into MP4.

So I used CCC to clone an exact copy (block by block) (make sure you purchase an universal USB SATA cable). It took about 8 hours to copy all of my 300GB worth of data from old drive to new drive.

It seems a bit slow. I wish they had made this a 7200RPM drive instead of only 5400. More space means it takes more time to search for data.

But it was very quiet. Worked without any flaw.

It seems more quiet than the old 320GB.

Got it when it was on sale at Amazon and what a bargain it was.

    Highly recommended.

If you need to upgrade (more space or just having problems with old drive), and if you have a Mac, absolutely no question about this, get it!!!

I had upgraded my PS3 40gig to the WD 320gig Scorpio [ WD3200BEVT ] it was hard to beat for about $78.00 something like 2-3 years ago and I have been satisfied with the drive in every way. Ive always wanted a lot more space and eventually I will go as big in drive size as possible. I was looking at the WD500 but it just couldn’t offer enough storage over my current WD320 @ 300gigs formatted. The WD640 was only $28.00 more and I’m happy to say its enough of a size increase @ 530gigs formatted to keep me happy for now.

I do have and use a few WD 1 Terrabyte USB 2.0 drives but they are far from ideal for my PS3 needs and just serve as a way to move files more so than being used as permanent drives for the PS3. In all honesty they are too slow when reading the File Allocation Table and the XMB doesn’t treat them the same functionality wise as it does an internal drive. A lot of media files usually wont play in succession, no folder repeat etc.

One note of caution on backing up a PS3, my backup after I slimmed it down came in at about 200gigs which took about 5 hours to create and is currently taking just over 8 hours to restore, streamline as much as possible or be prepared to wait ;) The bulk of mine is game installs and updates I would rather not have to download again. Though I just got the WD640 I have no doubt it should give me a long service life and if not Western Digital has a pretty good RMA program/Warranty.

If you are looking for a drive for the PS3 or otherwise I think this is a decent choice overall, for the money the WD500 is a better buy but for only about $30.00 more this is hard to pass up for those that want 500gigs of actual space.

Was able to pick this up for less than a hundred buck and that is a great deal for this drive. Using it in the last Macbook Pro late 2008 aluminum style that doesn’t have the easy access to the hard drive. After installing this drive I found it very responsive and quicker than the stock Hitachi 200GB. (Did partition the drive into 200GB for the main system and another partition for the rest.). One of the great things other than the responsiveness is it generates less heat in operation than the 7200 spinning Hitachi.

Used a youtube by OWC on the iPhone to help make the switch but if you have a unibody notebook, this is a layup. The drive is quiet, at times it has a soft whoosh that is barely detectable and not a problem. Considering the internal fan has come on only once, it’s a quieter, cooler operation overall.
